For this project, I decided to use strictly photos that I’ve taken and arrange them in a way that communicates the idea that thrifting is easy, advantageous, and can still be stylish. Usually, when people think of thrift stores, they think of dirty, out of date clothing that their grandparents would wear. What most people don’t know is that there are lots of hidden gems in thrift stores, and that most of these “grandma” clothes can be dressed up to fit today’s fashion. In every picture I used, all of the articles of clothing are thrifted. Some of the shirts are from the seventies and eighties, some are from current stores, and some are timeless pieces that could have been purchased at any time. I took the picture of the sign called “5 REASONS TO BUY VINTAGE CLOTHING” at my favorite store, Chosen Vintage. Although I think that the message behind it is very crucial to my topic, I didn’t want it to be the focus of the poster… I wanted it to compliment the thrifted clothing. With this poster I made, I didn’t want to have to add additional text to explain the purpose of the poster because I felt that the arrangement of photos was powerful enough. The audience’s eyes are allowed to wander freely, but since the only text on the poster is on why you should buy vintage clothing, a common theme becomes apparent to the audience: thrifted clothes. I didn’t want to jump into the specifics of why thrifting and buying vintage clothes is advantageous, but by using the picture of the poster, my audience gets a little teaser on just a handful of the perks that come with reusing clothes. I feel that the layout of the poster that I chose is more intriguing than the traditional collage, which I considered using at first. This style is different than what you’re used to seeing, which I feel might intrigue the audience and make them want to learn more about thrifting.
At first glance I was super impressed with this and thought it was great presentation. The area that is very strong is how you incorporated the advertisement into a normal picture of the jeans. I think it looks great how you have vintage jeans as the background then added the image into the pocket, that design part is very strong. One suggestion is try to figure out something to do with the text. I know we aren’t supposed to be able to read all 5 reasons because it is a tease which I like but not being able to read the last points is a little confusing in the whole of the picture. Another suggestion is I think it might be cool if you could make the grey background jean colored. It might make the design harder to read/see so it may not be the right way to go but maybe experimenting might come up with something cool and enhance the image.
I really like this project, I think it is very creative and I would never have thought of an idea like this. Something that could be changed to make your idea come across better is to make the images of the people wearing thrifted clothing bigger so that the clothing is more of the focus. I really like the idea of everything in the pocket of the jeans so you could crop the image to make the pocket bigger so that everything can be seen more clearly. Also centering the image with the text so that the heading is in the center of the jeans could make a big difference in the overall look of the image. There is nothing else that I would change about your project, I think it portrays your topic well and uses lots of photoshop techniques to create the final project. I really like how the color of the jeans and the sweatshirt is so bright. Good job!
I like how the design of this project. The way you put the smaller cutouts on the jeans pocket was a nice idea. I think the picture that says “5 reasons to buy vintage clothing” should either be smaller so more of the writing could fit on the page, or moved down little bit so that you can see all of the title. Some of the photos of you are a little confusing in how they relate to your theme. The two pictures of you on the left with a dog and the one of you on someone’s back I think. Overall I liked the project but I think it was just a little confusing with some of the pictures of you.
Overall, I am pleased with the feedback that I received because I went a little out of my comfort zone designing this project. I agree with everything that was said could be improved: the masking I did between the jean pocket and the vintage poster can definitely be done cleaner and even made smaller so that more of the words are included. The smaller cutouts I do intend to keep, but I might choose different pictures or make them larger so that you can see more of the clothing. I feel like that will intrigue the audience more. I think my main focus moving forward will be adjusting the text so that it fits and portrays a clearer image and fixing my cutouts to show more of what thrifting looks like and how it relates to my theme! I also may add even more cutouts, and figure out how to do so in a way that keeps my poster simple and not too overwhelming to the viewer’s eye.
