Draft Video

For this project, I decided to create a video which showcases some outfits that are completely thrifted. Originally, I was going to make a video about how I thrift and some tips I have for thrifting, but I didn’t end up getting the best footage inside of thrift stores (plus it was a little awkward). Instead, I headed to my closet and composed four different outfits from clothes I have accumulated from thrift stores and vintage stores over the past couple of years. There is a YouTuber I recently started watching, heyxnatalie, who’s style of editing I really admire. I’ve recently been inspired by her videos, and the way I edited my video is similar in some ways to the way she edits her videos. I’ve also enjoyed editing videos for some time, so I’ve acquired my own style of editing which occurs in this project.

For the main introduction, I used music I found on a no copyright music channel on YouTube and combined it with some videos from my phone, the cuts of videos corresponding with the beat of the song. I then created a title that stretched over all of my videos. This created an aesthetically pleasing introduction that flows well. However, I don’t necessarily love the videos I used for the introduction. I think I may try to create a new one with new footage for the final video.

I didn’t film an intro to this video so I decided to do a voiceover with some added titles in order to set up the concept of this video. It wouldn’t make sense for me to just hop right into the montage without explanation, so I figured a voiceover was better than nothing at all. I’m not really sure if it would be a better idea to film an intro and replace the voiceover or if it’s almost more aesthetically pleasing with just the voiceover. It keeps the focus on the videos of the outfits, rather than on me. I might film an intro for the final and see whether I like it better than the voiceover.

After the voice over, I faded another no copyright song in and created the montage of thrifted outfits. For this montage, I focused less on the video clips corresponding to the beat of the song, and focused more on the presentation of the outfits. While filming, I really tried to get a lot of different shots of each outfit so that when editing I would have lots of options to work with. I tried to edit in an engaging way, showing all different parts of the video while also keeping the shots flowy and fitting to my aesthetic.

After two hours of editing my video, my laptop died.

And my project didn’t save.

My fault, of course, but I was still very upset. It didn’t take me as long to edit the second time, but I noticed that after my computer crashed and I created a new project, all of my footage was lagging and I’m not sure why. I like the way it looks, but it did decrease the quality of my videos. When I go into my photos and watch the videos, they’re normal, but no matter how many different ways I tried to re-import the footage, it remained laggy. I’m not sure how to fix that or if there’s a way.

Overall, I’m really happy with how my video turned out, but I just need to figure out if this is the way I want to present my information. I’m also going to do some more investigating on the quality of my videos and if there’s a way to fix it.

I gave credit when I posted on YouTube, but here’s credit to the songs I used.

  1. This is a super cute idea! I liked the aesthetic and how it wasn’t completely clear in the picture ( I hope that was your intention). It added character and personality than just a regular video. I was thinking what if instead of taking a complete video in Goodwill, you could just take snaps or important things to look for and narrate the experience. Once, you picked out the items you could try them on and film your first reaction to the clothes you picked? That would cut down on awkwardness and also create a different layout in comparison to similar topic videos as well. My only critique would be with the speed of the video. I would have liked to see the outfits in more detail. I understand the time requirement so it’s not a huge aspect, but something to think about for next time. Otherwise, you did a great job and I hope you enjoyed filming! It looks awesome!

  2. Marley you have the best piece of editing for your project that I have seen in this class. The way it was edited with the black screen text images was very creative. Also the videos demonstrating and modeling your second hand shopping outfits were done In a unique way with the slower frame rate being applied to the video rather then recording normally on an iPhone without any adjustments. This made your video stand out and apart from the rest that I watched in our feedback group. The only criticism I have of your draft video would he the black screen text images were longer than I felt they needed to be or had to be and shortening them would make the video more intentional and transition better.

  3. Hi Marley,
I just wanted to start off by saying I LOVE your video and idea. It is super creative and you executed your idea wonderfully. You seem to have a natural talent when it comes to video editing! Your video concept seemed to be very thought out and like you dedicated a lot of time to it, it showed how passionate you seem to be about it. Your intro was incredible and I loved the yellow text you used. I do think the black screens with the white texts were a little longer than they needed to be but it was still a very very amazing rough draft. I really liked your editing style and that you have been inspired by others. If you are going to keep the voice over intro I would recommend doing something other than a black screen behind it. I also really liked the music you chose it helped showcase your video footage perfectly. Overall I think your project is excellent and you should be really really proud of it!! I cant’ wait to see your final video!

  4. Hey Marley, I think what you have so far is great! I can relate so hard to when the laptop dies and the project doesn’t save. It sucks. Regardless, I think you have a great starting point to go off of before you get to your final video! I like the editing style, it reminds me of my friends’ channels back home where they would also do outfit-oriented videos! The simple music, and going through the outfits work really well for the style of video you’re going for! But I think there are a few kinks to be worked out. First of all, the laggy footage is something that isn’t the best but can be fixed. I think that if the footage inside the program is laggy, just reimport the footage again and reline up the clips again. It’ll suck but it’ll be better to have stable, clean footage. In addition, while this is not a big deal, I have a few suggestions that I think could improve the video even more, such as just adding color and a different font to the title slides. And also, a good introduction to the video would make it great! Regardless of the few kinks here and there I think this is a great start! Good luck with your final project!

  5. Overall, I really like my rough draft. I know it’s not perfect, and I’m still kind of conflicted whether or not to film an intro or keep the voiceover. Two out of three people that have given me feedback at this point said that the black screen with the white titles is a little bit longer than it needs to be. With this information, I’m going to try to shorten the voiceover so it doesn’t feel too long and boring for the audience, and I’m also going to record an intro to see what style I like better. I feel like not having an intro where I’m filming myself might fit the aesthetic slightly more, but I need to find a way to make it short and to the point. I also kind of want to reshoot all of my footage since I can’t figure out a way to make it less laggy. I like the way it looks to have fewer fps, but the quality is terrible when put on full screen. One person recommended to try filming in goodwill again, but to be quite honest I don’t really have the funds to buy a bunch of new outfits and I feel like I have enough clothes to work with. Maybe I can take these clothes and explain each piece a little bit more before compiling the montage. I didn’t receive too much criticism, besides on the voiceover, so I’ll have to really break down each part and challenge myself to make them better. I think I’m also going to redo the very beginning introduction with more up to date videos of my life.

  6. Marley, I really liked how you showed multiple outfits that were completely thrifted together. Each one had good imagery and was very bright to create an interesting overview on your rough draft. My two suggestions revolve around the photography itself, meaning I would suggest to edit the slow motion a tad bit so you may make the video flow a little smoother. Also, adding in different text box effects could potentially create more contrast for the outfits, making the theme more visible to the viewer. Upon doing such, you could also add in some more audio or sound effects to create a systematically more sound overall draft. I really liked your portrayal and background content of the images as well. The time of day is sunset and it makes everything around you glow a bit more which looks amazing! Keep up the great work and everything will be perfect for your final draft.
